Credits & licences
MitLernen is built on open data shared by thousands of volunteers. Thank you. This page lists the sources and the licences they are used under.
Dictionary: Wiktionary via Kaikki.org
Meanings, parts of speech, genders, conjugation and declension tables, word forms and grammar labels are derived from Wiktionary, the free dictionary written by its contributors, using the machine-readable extraction published by Kaikki.org (wiktextract).
Licence: Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 International (CC BY-SA 4.0).
Changes were made: entries were selected, restructured and converted into the app’s database, and many meanings were shortened or rewritten for learners. These adapted dictionary data are shared under the same licence, CC BY-SA 4.0.
Example sentences: Tatoeba
Many example sentences and their translations come from the Tatoeba project, contributed by its community.
Licence: Creative Commons Attribution 2.0 France (CC BY 2.0 FR).
Changes were made: sentences were selected, and some were trimmed or corrected.
Pronunciation: Wikimedia Commons
Word recordings come from Wikimedia Commons and were made by their individual speakers. Each recording keeps its own licence: CC BY-SA or CC BY in various versions (see the Creative Commons licence list), CC0 or public domain.
Changes were made: recordings were trimmed and re-encoded. The speaker and licence of every recording are listed inside the app under Settings › Audio credits. Words without a recording are spoken by your device’s German voice.
MitLernen’s own content
The example sentences written for MitLernen, the CEFR level labels, topic categories, word lists, reading exams, the crab mascot, the logo and this website are MitLernen’s own work. Much of this content was made with Claude by Anthropic: Claude assigned the levels and topics and drafted the new example sentences and the reading exams, and every result passed automatic checks before I merged it. Where this work adapts the sources above (for example, a shortened Wiktionary meaning or an edited Tatoeba sentence), it stays under that source’s licence.
The reading exams are written for this app and are not affiliated with, endorsed by or derived from any exam provider.
